Dess-Martin Periodinane (DMP) is one of the most widely used, moderately and highly selective oxidants in modern organic synthesis. It is mainly used to oxidize primary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and secondary alcohols to ketones. DMP has very mild oxidation conditions for alcohols, and is generally fed at a low temperature and reacted at room temperature. Most reactions are completed in minutes to hours and the yield is normally maintained at a higher or very high level. The advantages are mild reaction conditions, moderate speed, low dosage, and simple post-treatment.
